Transformative Justice

Transformative justice (TJ) is an abolitionist framework that seeks to address harm, violence, and abuse without relying on interventions based on carceral strategies—punishment, retaliation, policing, surveillance, and prisons. TJ is survivor centered and community led and considers the context and conditions that lead to harm and violence as a result of structural oppression and generational trauma.

The overall goal of TJ is to address the root causes of violence and to create the conditions for accountability, healing, and safety for victims/survivors as well as those who perpetrate harm. TJ only occurs outside of state systems and structures because these systems are the site of violence that our communities must be protected from. Community accountability processes, survivor support, and building up the skills and practices we need to address conflict before harm and violence occur are some of the interventions TJ offers. As a framework, it challenges the false dichotomy between victim/survivor and perpetrator by understanding that all people cause harm and we must provide collective interventions to support people to transform this harm. TJ requires healing for anyone who has been directly or indirectly affected by harm and violence, including bystanders and the broader community. This framework has significant overlap with healing justice in that it seeks to interrupt cycles of trauma and harm and centers strategies for collective care, healing, and safety for future generations.10
